Pet owners are getting pet food recall settlement checks

by Therese on July 18, 2011

in Pet Food Recall, Pets

In April, it was announced that a twenty-four million dollar settlement had been finalized in the class action lawsuit due to the 2007 pet food recall.

Since then pet owners have been talking about the fact that settlement checks would be going out soon. The discussion here about the pet food recall settlement has been pretty active and even quite heated at times. Some of the information people reported getting from the settlement office was vague, contradictory, and just downright confusing. That, along with the memories of what they went through in 2007, caring for pets that still suffer, and trying to pay off the bills they racked up caring for dying pets has had many of them on edge.

Now, finally, the checks are starting to arrive. There’s some confusion as to what percentage of their expenses would be reimbursed and the checks are certainly reflecting that confusion. At this point, they’re not getting 100% of their expenses. Most are saying their checks are for about 50% of their documented claims. However, the checks have just started going out, so it’s possible they’ll receive multiple checks.

So the good news is that the checks are starting to arrive. But, no amount of compensation will make up for the suffering that was caused the careless, greedy pet food companies. I do hope though, that it will give pet owners who lived through this nightmare some closure of some sort.

I got my checks today. I had 2 claims, because 2 pets were affected. One had to be put to sleep, the other cost thousands to keep alive.

My combined total of DOCUMENTED expenses was $2,500+, and I received a letter stating as such a few months ago. What I received was $1,329.00 combined.

Over a THOUSAND dollar difference is just another slap in our faces. ~ Stacy, Boston.

Thanks Therese for posting this…It means so much to me that someone still thinks this is important…It was just such an unbelievable time for so many of us… it is not one i want to relive but at times like this it is important for us to be able to link up together!

It’s absolutely important!!! It bothers me that it’s done and over, long forgotten, for so many people.

Just got screwed again by the system! My pets are dead and the claims administrator deemed that pets is not are worth the money. I got a two checks for half the amount that was I eligible for reimbursement. This was after they disallowed $300 for each claim ($600 total). Someone want to tell me what the hell is going on! Lets take a look from start to finish!
Two claims, $1247 + $910= $2157.
Disallowed $300 for each claim ($600 total) =$1557
Eligible for reimbursement- $1557
Actual amount recieved- $820 (WTF!) less 50%…
Why take $1337 from $2157? Here’s the best thing of all, no appeal process. Let’s thank the system for screwing all the people involved not mention all the dead animals.

We are receiving zero from the settlement. We did get ~$1500 directly from P&G a few months after our pet died. Frankly, we would rather have out dog than 100x that amount. In the end, those of who were victimized lost so much more than we gained. The lawyers made a another killing, just like the Chinese did.

Amazing, everyone is getting ripped off, my letter said it would be $1900, today I recieved a check for $890!

The worst part is if you read the explanations to why, each fund had a set dollar amount, betwenn $250k-$400k, 4 funds total. How does that equal $22 million award!

Im glad to see we all lost our pets and the attorneys got richer!

What a scam, no justice!

I finally got my check today after losing my baby 4 years ago to this and it doesn’t even cover the $2800 I spent at the vet trying to save her. It was all fully documented as the letter I gOt showed but apparently that doesn’t mean crap and now this hurts all over again

I was a Class Member. The checks I received total $629.17. I was reimbursed for the veterinary expenses only, what I paid. This payout is such a damn joke its not even funny. These attorneys lined their own pockets to Get Rich Quick Scheme, and the Judge allowed it to happen. What a SCAM. They will all be buying Mansions next week in honor of screwing everyone who lost animals in this terrible ordeal. Looks like Heffler, Radetich & Saitta, the Claims Administrator who mailed these checks kept the rest of the 24 Million. Also, It makes no sense what their letter says. As explained in that letter, that Amount is NOT the amount of your final recovery in this settlement. To determine your final recovery amount set forth in this check, the following formula was applied. The first sentence states, The attached check represents your full and final recovery for the claim that you submitted. The endorsement or deposit of this check acknowledges your receipt of all cash sums due to you. They can go to hell.

I have not received anything yet. Could be because it is a Canadian claim? Not sure but this does not look promising, well at least not for the regular people who lost pets. If only I would have listened to my folks and become a lawyer, but then again…I have a heart!
I lost my Border Collie after 3 days of agonizing pain and lost hope in the pet emergency hospital. I cried for weeks thinking of how he suffered and four years later get tears in my eyes thinking of how hard that was for him, not just me. It makes me sick to think others got rich off the backs of the saddness we all endured, and the pain our buddies had to go through. Don’t let this stop you from making noise, post away!

I received my check last week…what a joke! Their letter stated I would receive 52.10% of other economic damages and I provided $989.00 worth of receipts from the vet. I’m no math expert, but isn’t 52.10% of $989 = $515? Instead, I received $85.00!! I tried calling the 800# but of course, no one picks up and they never answered my email. This SUCKS!!!

I just got a check for $468. I lost a service dog for epilepsy and this is what I get. I paid for his vet bills and cremation. Then, I purchased a new service dog for epilepsy for $2,000 and the training cost almost $9,000. Submitted all those documented bills and I get $468.00. I’m sick over the whole thing. I have hired an attorney to see what I can do!!

No amount of money will bring our beloved Topaz back to us healthy and happy, but where is the justice in all of this? Submitted documented claim for almost $3000, awarded just $870.92. Attorney took 348.37 in fees. Left us with $522.55.
While we still have Lexus with us, she does require regular medical visits for renal damage as a result of injesting the tainted food. Since only 7 months old when sticken, we are fully aware that future medical expenses could become very costly. We too were under the assumption that we were to receive 100% reimbursement of our documented claims and planned on allocating the recovered amount for future medical bills.
I guess what upsets me the most, is this was not at all an accidental poisoning, but corporate greed at it’s worst.

i, just like the rest, received less than 50% of my documented vet bills for my dog maggies menu dog food related illness. within 2 years she was put to sleep with numerous cancerous tumers which may or may not been caused by their tainted product.menu foods should have been forced to make full payment on all legitimate claims.it is a travisty that this company that tortured and killed our best friends is still in business today.

The lawyers have won again! We all took the lose and they got all the money. Don’t buy dog food, make your own.

Sherri August 5, 2011 at 11:33 am

I was reading a document explaining how the Menu Food Payments were going to be distributed, and according to an Attorneys perspective. The Payouts were going to be small for each Claim they received, and to include Class Members. The rest of the money left over from the 24 Million Fund was going to go to the State of New York to cover expenses for all of the lengthy Menu Food Trials.

I received several emails and phone calls to discuss why we weren’t compensated. They are willing to communicate evidently. Just don’t expect positive results.

Has anyone got an email address to which questions can be directed? As in, why I haven’t received payment yet, even though they sent me notification that payment would be forthcoming? Thanks!!

We got $39 for one dead cat and a cat that had emergency care for one week, about $3000 in expenses total. $39 doesn’t even cover a replacement cat from the humane society, much less the printing and postage costs to send the information to the lawyers. Class action suits are nothing but pocket fillers for lawyers. Absolutely no justice.
