Earlier today I hosted a teleclass on special needs pets. My guest was Sinde Correa from Pet Sitter Boot Camp, and VIPet Sitter Service in Colorado. She draws from her experience as an educator, and long time pet sitter to give other pet care professionals information on how to prepare for the elderly or ill pets entrusted to them. We talked about such things as assessing a pets’ needs, questions to ask the pet owner, how to tailor services according to what the pet needs, and much more. You can listen to the entire call here:

For more information . . .

I want to thank Cindy for taking her time to talk with pet sitters about special needs pets. She shared some really valuable information.

I was pet sitting my neighbors dogs and when i went back to check on them, the little dog’s eye was popped out of her eye socket. They have a golden lab and a golden. I called my mom because i didnt know where to take the dog and she called my neighbors and they called over to the vet and i rushed her there as fast as i can. what should i do the next time that happens if a dog gets hurt, should i tell them to leave a note where they go to the vet.

Before you ever pet sit for someone, you should have them fill out a veterinary release form. This will have their vet’s name, phone, and address on it – along with any instructions. In many cases it also lists how much the client authorizes to be spent in case you can’t get in touch with them right away. Many pet sitters also get a credit card from the client and keep that in a safe place, again, in case you can’t contact the client.

I hope the dog will be OK.
