My cat Tequila has cancer

Deja freakin’ vu!

It was just a year and a half ago that I wrote a blog post entitled, “My dog Lydia has cancer.” That sucked! I never imagined I’d say that phrase, but I’m so thankful Lydia’s done so well and has been happily in remission for quite some time. (Yay, Lydia!) I also never imagined I’d be saying the phrase I’m being forced to say now . . .

My cat Tequila has cancer.

Damn it!

Last week I took Tequila in for a routine exam. The blood work came back abnormal and the vet was fairly certain it was cancer, so she did more blood work. I just got off the phone with the vet a few minutes ago who called to give me the results of the most recent tests. What I heard isn’t what I was hoping for – it is indeed cancer.

Just like I did with Lydia’s cancer, I’m getting a crash course in cancer, this time it’s multiple myeloma. Multiple myeloma, the way I understand it, covers a broad range of blood disorders. Tequila’s is a plasma cell myeloma, which can cause cancerous skin lesions, and/or cancer cells in the liver, spleen or bone marrow.

Tomorrow Tequila is going in for an ultrasound. While he’s taking a look, the radiologist will also get some liver & spleen tissue samples. Hopefully this will tell us exactly where the cancer is and how it’s affected her so far. After that, we’ll probably be going to the oncologist to find out what options we have.

Tequila’s 12 years old and is one of the coolest cats around. And that’s not just me talking! Just about everybody who meets her comments on what a wonderful cat she is. I hear time and time again about how laid back she is, how fun she is to have around, and about how great her personality is. I happen to think all of that’s true, but it’s fun to hear it from other people too.

Tequila and I have been together since she was about 7 months old. That’s when my friend Sabra plunked her in my arms and said “hold this a minute.” That minute passed and I never let go! I held on tight to my little kitty, and she’s held on to my heart just as tight. Now it’s time to hold on to each other and fight this nasty stuff!

I hate cancer!

Update: It may not be cancer! See this post.

I am so sorry , I know what it is like to have a kitty with cancer. I had a siamese cat named siamie…yeah I know silly name, but he was the best cat ever. Anyway, he had been living with my ex..another story, and he calls me to tell me Siamie had a lump which quickly turned into a sore. We didn’t want to put him through chemo because he hated the vet and would really carry on with growling and trying to bite them. I did have surgery done so that he could be tested and as I said it was cancer. He lived a little over 5 months before we had to have him put down because he stopped eating and wasn’t making it to the litter box anymore. Yesterday, was his birthday and when I read your blog I immediately thought of him. He was 12 when he passed. I hope your kitty is able to recover from this. I will be thinking about her and saying a prayer!

I’m sorry too, Therese. Tequila is a beautiful cat inside and out. With so many of our pets developing cancer, you have to wonder whether it is becoming more prevalent or just being found more often because of better pet care. If more prevalent, why??? Is it the food we’re feeding — even the premium stuff — or the cleaners we use on our floors, or the air we’re all breathing. I wonder if anyone has studied the incidence and causes of cancer in pets.

Oh, crap! I was really hoping the second blood test would come back normal.
It sounds like you have a good vet, and I know you’ll stay on top of things.
Take a deep breath, think about what to do next, and know that you have a lot of people pulling for you and Tequila.

I love kitties like Tequila. Cats that actually come to sit in your lap and aren’t too aloof and stand offish. I’ve feel lucky that I’ve gotten to hold and enjoy this lovely creature. You are right, she is one cool cat for sure!

And I am SO grateful to hear about the latest update! All the paws are crossed over at my house!

I’m so sorry to hear this Therese! I absolutely hate cancer, it is the worst disease ever. My beloved kitty Tiger passed away because of vaccine induced carcinoma, a very invasive form. He did have multiple surgeries to remove the tumor (and regrowth), and at least that gave me an extra 2 years with him, for which I will be forever grateful. Me and my kitties are crossing our fingers and paws that Tequila will be okay!!
