Lydia and one of her favorite toys
Lydia has seen her oncologist for what I’m hoping will be last time. Since she finished chemo in March, we’ve been going in every month for a checkup, with an ultrasound every 3 months. I think her vet would have stretched out her checkups a bit more, but I felt more comfortable doing monthly checkups. Things have changed though. Her oncologist is moving to Chicago, so since she’s doing so well, we’re going to follow up as needed with her regular vet, and see an oncologist if necessary.
I’m really happy about the change since it means she’s doing so well. But, I feel a little like I did when we discontinued her chemo in March. Back then it felt like a safety net was being taken out from under us. I’m feeling a little of that now, but mostly I’m happy and relieved. It’s definitely something to celebrate! Stopping chemo turned out to be the right thing it seems, so hopefully this will be to.
I can remember the day my vet told me Lydia had cancer. I felt physically ill when he said the word cancer and that she might be with me for another 3 to 6 months. Thankfully though, he followed that up by saying he had never seen her type of cancer caught so early. Then he referred us to an oncologist, who we saw a couple days later. He gave me hope and gave her very good care.
It’s been a year and a half since Lydia was diagnosed with cancer, and believe me, I know just how lucky we are. The type of cancer she had can be ugly and very fast moving. We’re fortunate it was caught very early, have had excellent medical care, and pet health insurance to help pay for her treatment. At this point, I can’t think of a better outcome for a dog diagnosed with cancer!
I’m excited and happy we’ve made it this far, but I know cancer well enough to know it’s way too unpredictable. So I still make a point to be thankful for every day she happily wags her tail. We’re still taking things one day at a time, but now we’ll do it without an oncologist in our life (and hope it stays that way!)

Thanks you so much. Lydia’s been doing exactly that! And although I haven’t rolled around in the grass with her yet, I’m sure I’ll do that soon too!
