Lydia update: vet visit & diet

Lydia has had a great week! She seems to have recovered nicely from her surgery on July 1. Judging from the way she’s walking I know, without a doubt, that she’s feeling much better. Her gait is much more relaxed and she’s even started running in the back yard again. Yay!! And, not only is she walking and running like she should, she’s back to being her lovable, demanding self!

On Thursday the oncologist did some blood work to see how the chemo was affecting Lydia’s white blood count and it’s right where it should be. Normally with chemo, he said the WBC is expected to go down within 7 to 10 days after treatment. Thursday was the 8th post-chemo.

Lydia’s next chemo treatment is scheduled in two weeks and at that time, they’ll do blood work again to check the WBC. The hope is that it’ll go back up to a normal range, and if so, she’ll have the chemo treatment that day. If it doesn’t, then we’ll need to wait.

Besides the vet visit this week, I’ve been working on getting Lydia’s diet together. There appears to be just as much debate about diet for dogs with cancer as there is with healthy dogs! Raw, home cooked, commercial…you name it and there’s someone who swears it’s the best way to feed a dog fighting cancer. Based on what already know, what I’m reading, and what I’m comfortable with I’ve decided to go with a home cooked diet. She’s been on a raw diet most of her life with a limited amount of grains, but her new diet cuts way back on the grains. Since carbs tend to provide fuel for cancer, the idea is to give her a limited number of carbs, which for the most part come from vegetables. I’m introducing some new supplements into her diet as well.

At some point I may blog her full diet but right now Lydia, as well as Archie & Tequila are telling me they’re going to fall over if I don’t feed them NOW!!!

Thanks everybody! I intend to keep the updates coming.

And Fuzzy…I’m trying to arm myself with as much info as I can to help make decisions…and I have to believe those are the right decisions.
