Product Review: Water Dog

box.jpgThe WaterDog electronic outdoor pet drinking fountain is a clever gadget that connects to an outdoor water spigot and turns on whenever they walk within three feet of it. When it senses motion, it turns on a stream of water right from the tap. When they walk away, it turns itself off. It runs on 4 C sized batteries, which the documentation says will last about a year.

Archie & Lydia tried out the water fountain and gave it a paws up. It took them a little while to get the hang of it but once they did, it was pretty clear they liked the fresh, cool water. If my mom’s dog Abby was still with us she’d probably run the water bill up sky high – she loved anything that had to do with running water!

I’ve cared for outdoor dogs and felt bad that all they had was a hot bowl of water to drink from. And believe me, here in Texas, it doesn’t take long for it to heat up! I don’t care for many dogs anymore – and no outdoor dogs – but if I did, I would certainly recommend the WaterDog.

I’m not big on leaving dogs outside for long periods of time, but for those who spend a lot of time outdoors, this little invention is perfect. The WaterDog is also be ideal for dog parks and dog daycares.

Misty would turn my yard into a wetlands and Timmy wouldn’t leave the house. But it sounds great for non-weird dogs.

Sounds like a great idea – but I also wonder if dogs like my Lab who is afraid of any type of squirting water would be afraid of it and shy away from that area rather than turn it on. I know what you are thinking – a Lab that hates water is odd – but we have found he won’t go in the pool, won’t even paddle his feet at dog days at waterparks!

I also wonder if they wouldn’t see it as a game like the cat that can flush the toilet and does it over and over for amusement! Could waste a lot of water.

What a great idea for those hot, mid-western back yards in summer – I’m sure this sort of invention could definitely reduce the number of animals overheating because their waterbowls evaporated dry or got too hot.

I totally thought this was a great idea…

I have two problems though.

My spigot is outside of my fenced in yard.

and

Drool
