A pet food maker whose contaminated product may have led to the deaths of thousands of dogs and cats in North America has agreed to settle lawsuits with pet owners in the United States and Canada.

Streetsville, Ontario-based Menu Foods Income Fund announced the tentative settlements Tuesday.

“It’s a comprehensive settlement,” said Amy W. Schulman, a lawyer for Menu. “It would resolve all the claims.”

Schulman said she could not disclose how much the settlements would be worth, but the company did say that it expects its total costs associated with the massive recall of its products last year to be about $53.8 million.

Here’s the rest from USA Today.

And, according to a release by Menu Foods,

The settlement in principle is subject to several conditions, including the approval of certain other parties, the execution of a definitive settlement agreement and review and approval of the U.S. District Court and the Canadian courts. The parties advised the court that they are confident that a definitive settlement agreement can be reached.

The definitive terms of settlement, together with a motion for preliminary approval thereof, are scheduled to be filed with the U.S. District Court on May 1, 2008, with the hearing scheduled to occur at 11:00 a.m. on May 14, 2008. The scheduling for Canadian court approval has not yet been determined, but is expected to occur in a similar time frame.

I’m curious what a dead pet is worth these days.

Finally someone has acknowledged the numbers of pets killed (thousands). As you know, the FDA has stubbornly held onto to its “14” deaths. Has Menu acknowledged fault? Too bad we can’t get money from the Chinese company that put the melamine in the food.

NO AMOUNT OF MONEY WILL EVER BRING MY PIPPI BACK BUT SOMEONE NEEDS TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR WHAT HAPPENED TO ALL THESE DEFENSELESS ANIMALS, OUR BELOVED PETS, COMPANIONS AND FAMILY MEMBERS!
