This is how the grades were determined: http://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/pet/299415262.html
Start with a grade of 100
1) For every listing of “by-product”, subtract 10 points
2) For every non-specific animal source (”meat” or poultry”, meat,
meal or fat) reference, subtract 10 points
3) If the food contains BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin, subtract 10 points
4) For every grain “mill run” or non-specific rain source, subtract 5 points
5) If the same grain ingredient is used 2 or more times in the first five
ingredients (i.e. “ground brown rice”, brewer’s rice”, “rice flour” are all
the
same grain), subtract 5 points
6) If the protein sources are not meat meal and there are less than 2
meats in the top 3 ingredients, subtract 3 points
7) If it contains any artificial colorants, subtract 3 points
8 ) If it contains ground corn or whole grain corn, subtract 3 points
9) If corn is listed in the top 5 ingredients, subtract 2 more points
10) If the food contains any animal fat other than fish oil, subtract
2 points
11) If lamb is the only animal protein source unless your dog is allergic to
other protein sources), subtract 2 points
12) If it contains soy or soybeans, subtract 2 points
13) If it contains wheat (unless you know that your dog isn’t allergic to
wheat), subtract 2 points
14) If it contains beef (unless you know that your dog isn’t allergic to
beef), subtract 1 point
15) If it contains salt, subtract 1 point
Extra Credit:
1) If any of the meat sources are organic, add 5 points
2) If the food is endorsed by any major breed goup or nutritionist, add 5
points
3) If the food is baked not extruded, add 5 points
4) If the food contains probiotics, add 3 points
5) If the food contains fruit, add 3 points
6) If the food contains vegetables (NOT corn or other grains) add
3 points
7) If the animal sources are hormone-free and antibiotic-free add
2 points
8 ) If the food contains barley, add 2 points
9) If the food contains flax seed oil (not just the seeds) add 2 points
10) If the food contains oats or oatmeal, add 1 point
11) If the food contains sunflower oil, add 1 point
12) For every different specific animal protein source (other than the first
one; count “chicken” and “chicken meal” as only one protein source, but
“chicken” and “” as 2 different sources) add 1 point
13) If it contains glucosamine and chondroitin, add 1 point
14) If the vegetables have been tested for pesticides and are pesticide
free, add 1 point>

Does anyone have an opinion about Harmony Farms Holistic Dog and/or Cat Food? This is carried at our local Wegman’s store. I normally would not purchase any type of dog food at a grocery store, but I was surprised when I read the ingredient list. It seems to be very good quality. I purchased a can of “Country Chicken Dinner with Country Vegetables,” and my dogs loved it. I wondered if anyone else has fed this to their dogs.
I’ve been feeding my 4 dogs Dog Lovers Gold dry food for the past 6 months. Does anyone else use this?
Thank you,
Sue

Iams (from company website updated 3/30):
In fact, Iams and Eukanuba dry pet foods to DO NOT contain wheat gluten. Our dry dog and cat foods are made exclusively by P&G Pet Care and not by Menu Foods.

My dogs eat Merrick wet and dry food thanks to a good friend of mine and they are fine. They are 1 year old and 4 1/2 years old. My cat eats Fancy Feast (only the wet) and Wellness (only the dry) and she is fine. She is 9 1/2 years old and is an outdoor cat.
I highly recommend Merrick and Wellness for your canines and felines. Its a bit pricey, but well worth it.

Marian ~
Please check your Fancy Feast cans. There are quite a few formulas that have wheat gluten if you check Amazon.com.

Is there anything we can do or anyone we can contact to force pet foods like Precise to give us the information as needed?

Your site states that MERRICK PET CARE only makes one line of pet products.
That is INCORRECT INFORMATION.
They also make Blue Sky Beef & More pet food.
Merrick Pet Care also owns a Rendering Plant in Hereford, TX. The rendering plant is located at the same location as their Merrick Pet Care plant which they say is making human grade pet products.
Why would a pet food company who claims to use only human grade ingredients in their pet products also have a rendering plant at the same location?
The rendering plant is owned by Garret Merrick who is Tyler Merrick’s father.
Garret Merrick went to the USDA in …I think 2004 to state his support for use of SRM in pet foods. Why would a company who prides itself in using human grade ingredients want to tell the USDA that using SRM is okay in pet food?
What else is Merrick hiding? If you feed Merricks I urge you to contact them and ask for honest answers.
I called them on Friday…spoke with Ruby for a long time, and expressed my concerns about these facts. She told me that she did not know who Garret Merrick was and that she did not know anything about a rendering plant located in Hereford, TX.
She promised me that Merrick Pet Care only makes one brand of pet food.
Later in the day…while driving home from work I wanted to call Merricks back because I had not heard from Ruby. I called 411 for their number and was given 866-476-3310. They answered the phone saying “Blue Sky Dry Food Plant’.
I thought I called the wrong number, so I asked …”Is this Merrick’s Pet Care” and she said “Yes”.
I then asked her …”What dog food does this company make” She said “We make Merricks and Beed & More”. I then asked to speak with Ruby and I was transfered to Ruby’s voice mail.
I have yet to hear back from Merrick.
IMHO…there are no pet food companies that can not be trusted.

Dear Bryan,
Fromm Family Foods
I see that you replied to my posting on Petsitusa.com
http://petsitusa.com/blog/?p=210#comment-11294
First of all..thank you for reply.
As much as I would love to feed your dry food to my dogs, I just can not do it.
Why? Because by having your can food plant in China, you are supported their cruel and inhumane treatment of dogs and cats!
How can a company who prides itself on ethics …support a country that has no animal laws in place?
I ask you to please reconsider your support of this country. I ask you to please find another cannery.
Thank you!
