it IS a full time job and I’m not doing much else until my doubts
are cleared about what is safe to feed my cats, and that could take a long
time. Thanks to all of you full-time consultants and researchers, here!
I’m no scientist. This gets deeper every day, though. For instance,
Wheat Gluten is listed on Purina One’s website as an ingredient found
in their Healthy Weight product. We should beware as wheat gluten is under
investigation right now… Also, corn gluten meal is found listed in
several of the brands and varieties of cat foods that I have researched.
Corn gluten meal is approved for human consumption by the FDA, but is is
also used as an herbicide ????

I will just point this out, admit my own fault, correct myself and leave this issue be.
I read
meat and bone meal, and mistakenly thought meat meal “and” bone
meal. So without further ado… the AAFCO definition of:
Meat
and Bone Meal: the rendered product from mammal tissues, including bone,
exclusive of blood, hair, hoof, horn, hide trimmings, manure, stomach and
rumen contents, except in such amounts as may occur unavoidably in good
processing practices.
I stand
by my beet pulp statement and even the original intent of the meat and bone
meal statement, nothing has changed insofar as I can tell… it’s
still a whole meat source derivative… would you buy a can of “Meat”???
Sorry, I’d like to know what “Mammal” I’m feeding.
Thank
you, I was going to try to be civil on an end note here but sincerity to
myself got the best of me and so I’ve switched to my true-ego and
will say as Michael Weed and not as a rep of the company that the fact that
you willingly use those ingredients loses all repsect for you I prentended
to have, and to have a nutritionist back it up??? Well makes sense I guess,
the percentages probably work out… but it’s just not quality
ingredients. The problem is that it’s for the exact reason that ingredients
like that are even allowed into food that they also allow ingredients like…
nevermind, not even gonna say it.
I’ve
said from the get-go that I’m just an employee and doing this without
the expressed intent of my employer, but going toe-on with a president and
nutritionist sure gave me a lot more confidence in my knowledge of pet food.
You’ve responded in exactly the way I would expect a commercial food
to react to a threat to their poor-quality ingredients. Say what you want
from here, I don’t like what I’m turning into when I face you
because you would have my best friend in the world eat that garbage…
so I’m done with you, consider yourself ignored… just not worth
my time.
And sorry
everyone else for having to put up with this, I take full responsibility.

you are not the president or a nutritionist? I feed Kumpi and tried not
to say that. Evy is not a commercial company and I thing it is wrong of
you to call her food garbage. Then you must think very poorly of those police
officers in New York city and state, and lets see the United Nations k9
guys too.
I am
hoping I can find the information on your website to write to the president
of your company and see what he thinks about what you are saying. Enough

This
has all been very informative but at the same time very confusing! I feed
my 9 cats Friskies dry and wet and have never had a problem. But I have
to say I’m a bit nervous now and wonder if I should start making homemade
again. I had 2 cats that were always sickly from birth and I always made
them their food which kept them well. They lived to be 16 years old even
with all their problems.
I just wonder which commercial foods are safe. And now the dry foods are being questioned as to their safeness.

Until

HOME-MADE
RECIPES: Does anyone have suggestions for daily home-made food for dogs
or cats?
I’ve
always been uneasy buying processed food for my animals, esp. since I barely
trust what is given to livestock and then consumed by people, let alone
by-products and left overs that go into pet food. I am anxious, like many,
to get to the bottom of this horrible poisoning.
And just
a comment, I would never purposely buy pet food products made in China!
Think about it: how does China treat its people? its dogs? What are their
safety or health standards for food production? quality control? Don’t
they have incidents of avian flu? Aren’t they known to manufacture
clothing using dog fur? Who knows what’s really going in food that
is made there? Let alone their human rights issues . . .
I support
buying locally grown organic food for myself, whenever possible. The only
way I think I can do that for my pets is to try making my own food - at
least I’ll know what’s in it. Any suggestions?

i think
it would be nice if we could all take a deep breath and wish a blessing
to those who have lost their animal companions and those animals which are
affected by this toxin, and then follow this with a prayer (or whatever
you wish to call it…) of gratitude for those of us lucky not to have
our furry friends affected by this tragedy.
good
luck to all of the animal companions everywhere and my deepest sympathies
to those who have lost a pet. there are grief support groups for those who
have lost animals and i encourage anyone who needs this type of help to
contact their local humane society or aspca.
thank
you for a great site which i have forwarded to my entire address book, and
in turn asked them to forward to any pet owners they know.

Thanks
for that cute video to lighten us up a bit. That was adorable, and that
little kitty just proved how precious, cute, and fun our little fur babies
are.
Diane said,
I think
the Hill’s food was not the one for renal failure. I had both the
CD and the KD when I had my cats that were in renal failure. The one that
was recalled was MD which I don’t know what that was unless it was
mature diet or something. My cats were never crazy about those generic foods
like at the supermarket or Walmart, they seemed to like the name brands
better and it does seem like the ones recalled were mostly those generic.
Diane said,
But then
I should retract that because a lot of premium foods were on the list too
because of being made by Menu with the wheat glutin crap that was no good.
Its like don’t we have plenty of wheat here in the United States without
using it from someplace like Iraq or something. I mean, it makes them rich
but not us. No wonder U.S. economy is not that good when we have to get
poisoned crap from somewhere else.

Maybe
I have been watching too much TV but has anyone thought that this could
be some kind of terrorist attack. They could not get at us so they went
after our pets? Or maybe they went after us and missed?. Even if that is
just plain wrong it does make you wonder just how safe the human food is.
This changes everything. By the way I buy what every is on sale (I did before
this) and I have not seen a few of my cats in the last week or so. Not sure
it they are alive or dead.

I stopped
Purina ProPlan a couple of weeks ago when my cats starting the vomiting,
their fur was dingy and my oldest of the cats started acting very lethargic.
I put them on Kumpi and they have made a 180 degree turn around.
My 12
year 3 month old German Shepherd/Malamute mix, Lobo, is on Rymadyl for Arthritis.
After starting Kumpi I have been able to drop his dosage to 100 mg per day
from 200 mg per day. I give him 50 mg in the morning and 50 mg at night.
He is walking more, loves to go out and walk around the yard, smiles more,
is happier, his coat is much better and his complexion just appears more
healthy. I have been worried about having to put him to sleep because of
his inability to walk. In fact, before my move to MN from NC, I considered
putting him down thinking he would no be able to get through the cold weather.
It has
not been easy with him over the winter, but with the turn around I’ve
seen in just TWO WEEKS, I just wish I would have gone to Kumpi sooner….I’m
so amazed at the difference this food has made in his life. My vet was a
little surprised when I told them I only needed a 30 pill refill for him
- half in the morning….half at night. I’m hoping to reduce that
even further as the weeks go by. I don’t like how Rymadyl can negatively
impact the liver…so I’m being very cautious about how long I
can keep him on it. He goes for blood work in a few weeks.
For anyone
that is not sure what food to buy with the recalls of wet and now some dry….do
yourself and your loved one a favor - try Kumpi. You will be so glad you
did - not just for the quality of the food, but the fact that I just was
able to spend almost 90 minutes on the phone with Evy, the president of
the company. Have you ever spent 90 minutes on the phone with the Purina
or Iams president discussing nutrition????? Well, that to me speaks volumes
about Kumpi. Evy is all about the pets…all about the nutrition….all
about the health of our loved ones. I’m glad I can make a phone call
to the person who makes my loved ones food and I don’t get the run
around about co-packaging or our employees at this plant vs. that plant….I
get the truth from the source.
Kumpi
and Evy have a customer and a friend for life. Thank you Evy for giving
my Lobo many more years that I never thought he would have!
Sincerely,
Robert

I was representing my company earlier but I feel it all went wrong, blew up in my face and quite possibly put my job in jeopardy.
I’m
gonna stick around and chat and let you in on what I know about pet food
in general and news as it happens… but I’d like to retract every
prior statement I’m made about other foods or our own. I was hoping
to inform, but I think I just pissed some people off and I’m sorry.
Nothing I said was innacurate, but for some people accuracy doesn’t
count for anything. I don’t want to be demonized, I only want to help…
the last straw was when I was told that I thought poorly of those police
officers in New York city and state, and the United Nations k9 guys…
and then told that a letter would be written to my boss. I definitely crossed
the line when I called the other food garbage, it was my honest opinion
and I tried to seperate myself from my company prior, but it could very
well cause me to lose face at a job I’ve worked very hard for. My
boss would back me on everything said prior to calling that food garbage,
but THAT would get me into trouble.
I got
into almost name calling, and there where I failed… everything I said
was true and anyone who actually knows anything about pet nutrition will
know that I bested those guys, but apparently they had a cheerleader or
2, and to question their integrity was to “think poorly of those police
officers in New York city and state, and the United Nations k9 guys”…
friggin absurd.
Anyway,

don’t panic. The Hills prescription diet that was recalled today was
Feline M/D dry which is prescribed for weight loss and Diabetes. If your
daughter’s cat had crystals she would likely have been prescribed
either c/d or x/d depending on the type of crystals. You can go to the Hills
website and see a complete list of all of their prescription diets with
an explanation of what they are used for.

FYI,
I spoke with my vet early this evening. She is currently suggesting that
I (& others) temporarily feed our cats & dogs absolutely no pet
foods at all (with the exception of Solid Gold if the animal likes &
tolerates that brand; they do use some Seafood products) until we eventually
get some definitive information. For my cat (who seems to have an allergy
to seafood), she suggested temporarily feeding Gerber Stage 2 baby food,
with possibly some ground turkey.
I have
been trying Felidae this week, but my cat appears to be allergic to something
in the formula.

Regarding
Hills, I have had 2 experiences:
My female
kitty, PP thrived on hills from about 1985-1996 when she passed away from
a heart attack (likely not caused by Hills).
On the
other side, my current male kitty Sylvester had a horrible history of uti’s
when he was young, which ended up requiring an amputation & $5,000 in
medical bills. In his case, we discovered that Hills was the culprit, any
time he ate it he got a uti almost immeadiately; now at age 10 1/2, he’s
never had a uti while eating ANY other brand of food.
